Since ancient times, people have tried to come up with a way to make an indoor structure cooler by using air from the outside. The Ancient Romans didn’t have air conditioning installations, but they used to move water from the aqueducts throughout the walls of their homes to try and keep them cool. The fan was invented with blades that pushed air around, but this air wasn’t necessarily cool. Benjamin Franklin and John Hadley performed experiments in the 1750’s on how evaporation could cool an object. John Gorrie was an important player for cooling systems in the 19th century. He created a version of an air compressor to help cool the sick patients he took care of as a physician. It was a combination of these various ideas and different experimentations with different chemicals that led to the 1902 invention of the modern day air conditioner.
Since the turn of the 20th century, technology has come a long way. Air conditioning installations these days are much more efficient than they have been in the past. To keep your cooling systems operating efficiently, there are important preventive measures to take on a regular basis. This promotes energy efficiency, because if your air conditioner is not working properly (for example, if the filter is clogged), it will take more energy to cool your house.
Depending on the different make and model of air conditioner you purchase, it will have a different SEER energy efficiency rating. We perform air conditioning installations for all makes and models, but the following are some facts about SEER ratings you may want to take note of before purchasing a cooling system:
- SEER stands for “seasonal energy efficiency ratio.” Mathematically, it is calculated by dividing the Btus (a unit to measure cooling output) by the electricity input (measured in watt-hours) over the same period of time.
- The higher the SEER rating, the better the cooling system is in terms of energy efficiency. If you’re considering air conditioning installations anytime soon, a higher SEER number will mean you’ll save more on your energy bill.
- Older air conditioners might have a SEER of 5-7, but today you can rarely find a cooling system with a SEER less than 9. In 2006, it was required that air conditioners have a minimum SEER of 13.
- Cooling systems are considered Energy Star qualified if they have a SEER of 14 or higher. Consumers considering air conditioning installations should try to find a cooling system with a SEER of at least 14 for the best results.
There is a lot of science that goes into calculating the input and output of energy and cooling in air conditioning systems. While the actual mathematical equations are not important to memorize, it’s good to know the rating system.
